Juicy amla has arrived in the market. Many Ayurvedic groups are preparing to produce a few hundred kilos of Chyawanprash.
Discussions are going on in such a wide range from science to practice, whether to add Ashtavarga or not, whether the original is available or not.
But I have some preliminary doubts about the formulation/preparation of Chyavanprash and the ambiguity of Amlaki.
In fact, to have any doubts about the two very famous Ayurvedic medicines Chyavanprash and Amlaki is to show my ignorance of Dravyaguna Bhaishajyakalpana and Ayurveda as a whole.
Even though Knowing this, still I would like to present the following points to expert, experienced, active Ayurvedics.
'Amalki' is the second drug mentioned/described in both, Charak Chikitsa 1 and Bhavprakash Nighantu.
1. In Bhavprakash, the weight of Haritakiphala is said to be 'Dvikarsha'.
2. Charaka Chi. 1, Here it reads
'eka haritaki yojya, dvau cha yojyau bibhitkau / chatvaryamalkanyevam triphala'.
3. In Triphala Yoga, all the three substances are in equal proportion by volume/weight.
Can it be said from these three statements?
1 Haritaki = 2 Karsh = 2 Bibhitaka = 4 Amlaki = 2 Karsh
1 Bibhitaka = 1 Aksha = 1 Karsha
(Aksha = Karsha, A.Hr. Kalpa. 6)
From this,
1 amlaki = 1/2 half karsha ; Is this statement correct? ...
yes, it is correct.
Basically, what should be the equivalent measurements of Pala, Karsha today in grams?
There are many differences in this regard.
Still 1 pala is considered to be 40 to 50 grams.
So 1 karsh is 10 to 12.5 grams.
Therefore *half karsha is meant to be 5 to 6.25 gm*.
That means 200 to 160 Amalaki fruits should be there in 1 kg.
Does the fruit we use today pass this test?
In the era of 'Samkhya Syad Ganitam' or 'Objective Numeratics', are we using Amalakifala, just by assumption / custom?
Chyawanprasha clearly says to take 500 Amalkee falas.
Then if we take 500 Amalkiphals in use today, their total weight is 14 to 17 kg.
No one takes that much amla for a given scriptural amount to prepare Chyavanprasha.
Today's practice is usually 500 amalkee phalas means 5 kg.
Is this a bold statement?
Well basically, 1 Amlaki = 1/2 half a karsha' ie 5 to 6.25 grams.
if the statement is true, then
The weight of 500 Amalkiphal is only 2.5 to 3 kg.
And on the other hand, today's amla, if 5 kg is taken, it comes to 150 to 175 fruits Only, not 500. (According to 30 to 35 fruits in 1 kg)
*Then where does 'classical Chyavanprasha' gets prepared?*
*In no way do we come close to the literalness of 'Amlaki or Chyavanprasha' in terms of fruit numbers (numbers) or phala rashi bhaara (total weight).*
*
The same thing about the amount of sugar in Chyawanprasha.
'Matsyandika Tulardhen' is the original reference.
Ardha Tulaa = 100 ÷ 2 = 50 Pala = 2000 to 2500 grams = 2 to 2.5 kg.
I don't think anyone is adding so little sugar.
It is common practice to add 5 kg of sugar to 5 kg of Amalkiphal.
Shastrokta/Granthokta Chyavanprash Yoga says 500 Amalkeefala and 2 to 2.5 kg of sugar ...
but
But in normal practice, thousands of kilos of Chyawanprash is made everywhere with 5 kilos of amla and the same amount of sugar.
No one is preparing as scriptural / textual / Samhitaa ...
and still, while printing the label, mention in bold type such as scriptural / textual / Shaastrokta … !!!😇🙃
What/why is this fraud for?🤔⁉️
'Rudhiryogadapi Baliyasi' … ok. This is accepted.
but on other hand modern science/ modern medicine Determines the dose in mg milligrams and aren't we committing offense/crime in the calculation of kilos & tonnes !?
"Oh why are you drilling our brain? Aren't the results coming?"
Does that mean to surrender to utilitarianism everywhere?
'Well, any answer, alternative to this question of authentication of amalaki and proportion of sharkara?
Why just drill thebrain unduly?
Well, look at this…
1. A small amla is available in the market, let's weigh it.
Oh, really! Its average weight is 5 to 6 grams.
...
So will you prepare Chyavanprasha using these?!
These small Amalkiphal are to be taken 500 in number as per samhitaa and sugar is 2 to 2.5 kg.
2. use market available 500 regular big Amlaki phalas, but sugar is only 2 to 2.5 kg… not 5kg.
3. Take 500 small amlakee phalas. Weigh those. Take market available regular big Amlaki phalas as that same weight 500 small Amalkiphalas. and take 2 to 2.5 kg of sugar.
Amalkiphal is variable in these 3 alternatives. So let's keep the amount of sugar constant.
Today, a few thousand kilos of Chyawanprash is “manufactured” in *traditional (not scientific … not samhitokta)* manner in Entire Bharata.
Let us Just make 1 to 5 kg of Chyawanprasha in the above suggested 3 ways.
To avoid 'business loss' the rest of the Chyawanprasha should be made 'sweet chocolaty delicious' as usual.
If the results of using the above 3 types of Chyawanprash on thousands of patients of hundreds of vaidyas are collected, next year it will be 'officially' standardized and can be presented to the public.
And those who make abrupt Chyavanprash recipes can be firmly stopped on 'scientific' basis.
Should we do this for science?
Let us come together for the cause of Ayurveda.
'Sangachchadhvam samvadhvam ...
&
'asadvadipryuktanam vakyananam pratishedhanam’
and
'svavakyasiddhi: api ...
We all have to prove the purpose of Tantrayukti.
Even though the Tantrayukti is given at the very end of both the syllabus and the Samhitaa.
'Perhaps the patients will get a more beneficial and financially more affordable 'Yoga'.
Some time again in near future let us discuss about other ambiguous matters in Chyawanprasha... Like maatra/dose, Ashtavarga, Dashamul, Matsyandika, Kesar etc.
Hopefully, all the successful Vaidyas, all the teachers of Dravyaguna and Bhaishajyakalpa, all the amateur students who prepare Chyavanprasha and the famous pharmacy all over bharata will think constructively and give 'Ethical response' (not reaction, but response) to this proposal.
